The L-4/NE-1 Grasshopper, known as "Pacific Warriors" in tribute to their role in World War II, were military adaptations of the civilian Piper J-3 Cub.

Widely used by the U.S. Army Air Forces and Navy for various support roles, these lightweight, versatile aircraft excelled in reconnaissance, artillery spotting, medical evacuation, and light transport in the Pacific Theater.

Key Features:

Design: A high-wing, single-engine aircraft with tandem seating for two. The L-4 featured a simple, rugged design suitable for short takeoffs and landings from unimproved fields.
Performance: Powered by a 65 hp (48 kW) Continental A-65-8 engine, it had a top speed of about 85 mph (137 km/h) and a range of 190 miles (305 km). Its slow speed and high maneuverability were advantageous for observational duties.
Role: These planes were crucial for directing artillery fire, carrying messages, and transporting small amounts of supplies or personnel. They often flew low and slow, using their agility to avoid enemy fire and to land and take off in rough terrain.
Navy Version: The NE-1 designation was used by the U.S. Navy for a similar role, primarily as a liaison and observation aircraft.

Nicknamed “Grasshoppers” for their ability to operate from small clearings and rugged landscapes, these aircraft were pivotal in many Pacific campaigns, enabling crucial communication and coordination across dispersed island battlefields.
