Throughout the 1930s, a series of production agreements were established for the manufacture, by the Canadian subsidiaries of major American automobile manufacturers, of a line of trucks designed to meet the transport needs of British troops and the principal countries of the Commonwealth.

Production was significantly increased during World War II, and the "Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) trucks" accompanied Commonwealth troops on major European fronts, from the North African campaign, to the invasion of Sicily, to the Normandy landing.

Robust, reliable, and particularly effective in operational use, they were produced in numerous configurations and with various roles, from military logistics to artillery towing.

The CWT 15 version, with four-wheel drive and good load capacity, was particularly appreciated.

The Chevrolet 15CWT Lorry was a versatile and rugged military truck used extensively by Allied forces during World War II.

The "15CWT" designation refers to its carrying capacity of 15 hundredweight, or roughly 1,500 pounds (680 kg).

Built by General Motors of Canada, the 15CWT Lorry became one of the most widely used light trucks in the British and Commonwealth armies, renowned for its durability, reliability, and adaptability in various combat and support roles.

The 15CWT Lorry was based on a civilian truck chassis but was heavily modified to meet military needs. It featured a simple yet robust design, with a steel frame and an open cab, which made it easy to produce and maintain in large numbers.

The vehicle was powered by a Chevrolet 216 cubic inch (3.5-liter) inline-six engine, delivering about 85 horsepower.

This engine, coupled with a manual transmission and a sturdy suspension system, allowed the 15CWT to navigate rough terrain and perform effectively in diverse environments—from the deserts of North Africa to the forests of Europe.

One of the key advantages of the Chevrolet 15CWT was its versatility. The truck was produced in various configurations to suit different operational requirements.

Common variants included general cargo carriers, personnel carriers, ambulances, radio trucks, and even specialized versions equipped with anti-aircraft guns.

This adaptability made the 15CWT an indispensable asset to the Allied war effort, capable of performing a wide range of tasks from transporting troops and supplies to serving as a mobile command post.

The 15CWT's reputation for reliability was well-earned, as it proved to be a dependable workhorse under challenging conditions.

Its simple mechanical design made it easy to repair in the field, ensuring that it could remain operational even in the harshest circumstances.

This reliability, combined with its flexibility, ensured that the Chevrolet 15CWT Lorry was in constant demand throughout the war.

In post-war years, many 15CWT Lorries were repurposed for civilian use or adapted for further military service in various countries.

The legacy of the Chevrolet 15CWT Lorry is one of resilience and practicality, embodying the qualities that made it a cornerstone of Allied logistics during World War II.

Its widespread use and effectiveness in multiple roles have secured its place as one of the iconic military vehicles of the 20th century.
