The Dardanelles Campaign, also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, took place in 1915 during World War I and was a significant military operation aimed at securing a sea route to the Russian Empire through the Dardanelles Strait.

This strategic initiative was primarily spearheaded by the British and French forces, with significant contributions from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), as part of the Allied effort to weaken the Ottoman Empire, a Central Powers ally.

The campaign began with a naval assault on the Dardanelles in February 1915, which proved unsuccessful due to strong Ottoman defenses, including minefields and artillery.

Following the naval failure, a large-scale land invasion was launched on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915.

Allied troops faced fierce resistance from the Ottoman Army, led by Mustafa Kemal (later known as Atatürk), and were hampered by difficult terrain and logistical challenges.

The campaign quickly bogged down into a costly and protracted trench warfare reminiscent of the Western Front.

Despite several offensives and counterattacks, the Allies failed to achieve a decisive breakthrough.

The harsh conditions, combined with disease and high casualties, further plagued the troops.

After eight months of fighting and heavy losses on both sides, the Allied forces evacuated the peninsula in December 1915 and January 1916.

The Dardanelles Campaign is often remembered for its high human cost and as a stark example of the difficulties of amphibious warfare.

It also had significant political and military consequences, including bolstering Turkish national identity and contributing to major changes in Allied military leadership.
