Hobbyboss 1/48 TBD-1 Devastator # 81783
The TBD-1 Devastator was an American torpedo bomber used by the United States Navy during the early years of World War II.
Designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, the TBD-1 played a significant role in naval aviation history, particularly during the early battles of the Pacific theater.
Despite being considered advanced for its time, with features like an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear, the TBD-1 faced challenges in combat due to its slow speed and inadequate defensive armament.
Its most notable action came during the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where TBD-1 squadrons suffered heavy losses against Japanese forces.
The Battle of Midway marked a turning point in naval warfare, highlighting the vulnerability of torpedo bombers like the TBD-1 to enemy fighters.
Although the TBD-1 Devastator's service was relatively short-lived, its contributions to naval aviation development and its role in historical engagements remain significant.
The Douglas TBD Devastator was a torpedo bomber of the United States Navy, ordered in 1934, it first flew in 1935 and entered service in 1937.
At that point, it was the most advanced aircraft flying for the USN and possibly for any navy in the world. However, the fast pace of aircraft development caught up with it, and by the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the TBD was already outdated.
It performed well in some early battles, but in the Battle of Midway the Devastators launched against the Japanese fleet were almost totally wiped out.
The type was immediately withdrawn from front line service, replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger.
