The MiG-35 is a modern 4.5-generation multirole fighter developed by Mikoyan in Russia.

It is an advanced derivative of the earlier MiG-29 series, designed to bridge the gap between fourth-generation and fifth-generation fighter aircraft with enhanced avionics, maneuverability, and weapon systems.

The MiG-35 is intended to serve both as a superior air combat fighter and a ground attack platform, making it highly versatile in modern warfare.

Key Features:

Design and Airframe:

The MiG-35 retains the classic twin-engine, twin-tail design of the MiG-29, but with significant enhancements to its airframe and systems for improved aerodynamics, reduced radar cross-section, and extended service life.

The use of advanced composite materials reduces the aircraft’s weight and improves its durability.

It has a length of 17.32 meters, a wingspan of 12 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of around 29,700 kg.

Engines and Performance:

The MiG-35 is powered by two Klimov RD-33MK afterburning turbofan engines, which offer increased thrust and better fuel efficiency compared to earlier MiG-29 engines.

Each engine produces around 9,000 kgf of thrust with afterburner.

It has a top speed of 2,400 km/h (Mach 2.25) and a combat radius of around 1,000 km without external fuel tanks, which can be extended with in-flight refueling.

The fighter is highly maneuverable, featuring thrust-vectoring capabilities in some versions, which enhances its dogfighting performance and agility at high altitudes.

Avionics and Sensors:

The MiG-35 is equipped with a cutting-edge Zhuk-AE AESA radar (active electronically scanned array), which can track multiple air and ground targets simultaneously and has an extended detection range.

This radar greatly improves the aircraft’s situational awareness and target acquisition capabilities.

The aircraft also features an infrared search and track (IRST) system for passive detection of enemy aircraft, providing a stealthy alternative to radar use.

A glass cockpit with digital multi-function displays (MFDs) and a helmet-mounted display (HMD) system allows pilots to quickly engage targets by looking at them, enhancing situational awareness and response times.

The MiG-35 also integrates advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems, including electronic countermeasures (ECM) and self-protection systems, which improve survivability against enemy missile and radar threats.

Armament:

The MiG-35 can carry a wide variety of air-to-air, air-to-ground, and anti-ship missiles, making it highly versatile in different combat roles.

This includes the R-77 and R-73 for air superiority missions, and Kh-31 and Kh-35 for anti-ship roles.

It has nine hardpoints for external weapons, with a maximum payload capacity of around 7,000 kg.

For close-in combat, the MiG-35 is equipped with a 30mm GSh-30-1 autocannon, with a high rate of fire effective against both air and ground targets.

The aircraft is capable of deploying precision-guided munitions, including laser-guided bombs and air-to-surface missiles, which enhances its strike capability in ground-attack missions.

Stealth and Survivability:

While not a full-fledged stealth fighter, the MiG-35 incorporates reduced radar cross-section (RCS) technologies and signature management measures to make it more difficult to detect by enemy radars.

The integration of countermeasures and an advanced defensive suite gives it better survivability in contested airspaces.

Multirole Capability:

The MiG-35 is designed as a true multirole fighter, capable of conducting a wide range of missions, including air superiority, interception, ground attack, close air support, and maritime strike operations.

Its ability to engage in beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat and close-in dogfighting makes it highly flexible for modern air warfare.

Operational Role:

The MiG-35 is expected to replace older aircraft in the Russian Air Force’s inventory, such as the MiG-29, and is being marketed for export to countries looking for an advanced yet cost-effective multirole fighter.

It provides an alternative to Western fighter jets, offering high performance at a competitive price.

Advanced Features:

The MiG-35 features network-centric warfare capabilities, allowing it to share data in real time with other friendly aircraft and ground stations, improving overall battlefield awareness and coordination.

The use of targeting pods for laser-guided munitions allows for precision strikes against ground targets, giving it a potent ground-attack capability.

In-flight refueling capability extends its operational range, allowing it to conduct long-range missions without relying on forward airbases.

Legacy and Future:

The MiG-35 represents the latest evolution of the MiG fighter lineage, blending the combat-proven design of the MiG-29 with modern systems to make it competitive in the 21st century.

While it has faced stiff competition from Sukhoi fighters in the Russian Air Force, the MiG-35 offers a more cost-effective solution for both Russia and export customers looking for a multirole platform with high performance and modern technology.

The MiG-35 serves as a symbol of Russia’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a strong, flexible fighter force, providing a powerful option for nations seeking an affordable, high-performance combat aircraft.
