By October 1944, the Grumman TBF and General Motors-built TBM-1C Avenger had become the backbone of U.S. Navy torpedo bomber squadrons in the Pacific Theater.

Rugged, reliable, and versatile, the 1C variant featured improved armament, including wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns and increased internal fuel capacity.

These aircraft played a critical role during major naval operations such as the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, delivering torpedoes and bombs against Japanese ships and ground targets.

Crewed by three—a pilot, turret gunner, and radioman/bombardier—the Avenger was known for its heavy payload, long range, and survivability in combat.

Its performance during this period solidified its reputation as one of the most effective naval attack aircraft of World War II.
