The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVI High Back was a British single-seat fighter aircraft used during World War II.
It was a variant of the iconic Spitfire, distinguished by its Merlin 266 engine, which was a version of the Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin 66.
This engine allowed for increased performance at low and medium altitudes. The "High Back" designation refers to the aircraft retaining the original fuselage design with the distinct elevated rear fuselage and canopy, in contrast to the later "bubble canopy" versions that provided better pilot visibility.
The Mk.XVI High Back was renowned for its excellent handling, agility, and effectiveness in combat, contributing significantly to the Allies' air superiority efforts during the war.
