During World War II, Malta was a strategically important island for both the Axis and the Allies.
Located in the central Mediterranean, Malta was an important base for Allied operations in North Africa and the Middle East.
To maintain control of the island, the Allies had to keep a steady supply of men and materials flowing into Malta, while also defending it from Axis air and sea attacks.
One of the most significant contributions to the defence of Malta was the deployment of the Spitfire fighter aircraft.
