The StuH 42 Ausf.G Late Version (Sturmhaubitze 42 Ausführung G) is a variant of the German self-propelled assault gun used during World War II.

Developed from the widely successful StuG III (Sturmgeschütz III), the StuH 42 was specifically designed to provide infantry support with its 105mm howitzer.

Design and Armament
The StuH 42 Ausf.G Late Version is based on the chassis of the StuG III Ausf.G but is distinguished by its main armament: a 10.5 cm leFH 18/1 L/28 howitzer.

This powerful artillery piece is capable of firing high-explosive shells, making it highly effective against infantry positions, fortifications, and lightly armored vehicles.

The howitzer is mounted in a fixed superstructure with limited traverse, requiring the vehicle to be turned to aim.

Armor and Mobility
The vehicle's armor is well-suited for its role, with frontal armor thickness up to 80mm, providing substantial protection against small arms fire and shrapnel.

The sides and rear are less heavily armored but still offer protection against light anti-tank weapons.

The StuH 42 Ausf.G is powered by a Maybach HL 120 TRM engine, producing 300 horsepower, allowing for a top speed of around 40 km/h (25 mph) on roads and somewhat less in rough terrain.

Features and Upgrades
Late production models of the StuH 42 Ausf.G saw several upgrades over earlier versions, including improved armor layout and the introduction of Schürzen (side skirts) to protect against anti-tank rifles and shaped charge projectiles.

Additional features included a more efficient muzzle brake on the howitzer, smoke grenade dischargers for defensive purposes, and a better arrangement of internal ammunition stowage for increased safety and efficiency.

Operational Use
The StuH 42 Ausf.G was deployed primarily in support of infantry units, providing direct fire support to eliminate enemy strongpoints and assist in offensive operations.

Its howitzer could also be used in an anti-tank role when necessary, although it was not as effective as dedicated anti-tank weapons.

The vehicle saw extensive service on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, where it was valued for its firepower and versatility in various combat scenarios.

Legacy
The StuH 42 Ausf.G Late Version represents a key element of German armored doctrine during World War II, emphasizing the importance of mobile artillery support in combined arms operations.

Its design and effectiveness made it a respected and feared asset on the battlefield, contributing to the tactical successes of German infantry units throughout the conflict.
